Bên VN còn có tầm vong (khác với tre và trúc là tầm vong gần như đặc ruột - bên trong thân chỉ có lổ nhỏ chừng 1/4 in - nên dùng nhiều về cây hơn là tre trúc). Dưới thời đô hộ Pháp, dân Việt vùng lên dùng tầm vong vạt nhọn để đâm Tây ... Cả đám dân ùa lên thì bị tụi Tây bắn 1 phát súng là bà con bỏ tầm vong chạy tán loạn ... Ở Florida có nhiều nơi bán những thứ trúc loại hiếm như trúc sọc, trúc hai màu, trúc Phật ... giá chừng $75 đựng trong chậu 3 gal. ...

Phyllostachys nigra (Black Bamboo) can grow up to a height of 30 feet with a diameter of 2 inches. It's minimum temperature tolerance is estimated at 0 degrees. It is recorded growing in Maryland and Washington, D.C., but slow to reach it's maximum height there.

This bamboo tends to weep or lean out from the grove with rain or snow. Some pruning of the tops of the culms helps prevent this.

Even some of the larger 35 gallon containers have been completed for large landscaping projects.

P. nigra is a favorite garden ornamental in China
and Japan. Those who grow this bamboo in
Western gardens are charmed by it's
graceful habits and by the sharp contrast
of color provided by the dark culms and green
foliage. This beautiful bamboo does not like wind
and the foliage can be damaged by 10 degree F.
if a dry wind is present, so it needs to be planted
in a protected place. It does well as a potted
bamboo as long as it is placed in a cool place in
the winter to have a dormant period.
